About Me

Mrs. Laura Black graduated from UNC-Greensboro in 2007 with a degree in music education and completed her Masters in Music Education at the same university in 2023. Laura has completed Levels 1 and 2 of Orff-Schulwerk and is excited about completing her certification with Level 3 soon!

Laura is in her 17th year of teaching. In her first four years of teaching middle school orchestra, her program grew from 35 to over 140 musicians; her students were active in All-County orchestras, Eastern District orchestras, and the NC Music Performance Adjudication, where they consistently earned ‘Excellent’ and ‘Superior’ ratings. While her first nine years of teaching were spent in middle school orchestra, she made the jump to elementary general music and has not looked back! She currently teaches at Rocky Point Elementary in Rocky Point, NC, teaching preschool through 5th grade. While at Rocky Point, Laura has received over $22,000 in grants and donations to purchase new instruments and fund educational STEAM projects. Most notably, she was one of the recipients of Music and Arts “Be a Part of the Music” grant for 2022, which purchased violins for her growing after-school Strings Club. As a presenter, Laura has presented sessions at the district, state, and national levels about beginning elementary orchestra programs, developing recorder curriculums and teaching creative processes in the elementary music classroom, such as composition, improvisation, and storytelling.

In her free time, she enjoys sewing, playing the violin, and raising her four beautiful children with her amazing husband, Casey.
